How She’d Wear It with Style and Cheek – Capes

HSWI October 2014

We’re ending October with capes, a very fitting end to the month that is all about Halloween costumes. While I would have loved to put together an outfit fit for a witch or superhero get-up, instead I have two outfits that are perfectly acceptable to wear whenever you like. Capes = drama, but don’t worry, they are suitable to wear outside the witching season. I’ve done a couple outfits over the past few months that involve capes with more of a witchy vibe but today I tapped into boho influences and equestrian style which look fantastic with capes. A cape is a great choice if you’re wearing something delicate underneath and want to prevent wrinkling. And don’t forget that capes come in all sorts of weights and fabrics, so depending on your needs (and the weather) there is a cape for almost any occasion. I hope that my posts on capes, ponchos, and throws have shown you that this trend is a lot easier to navigate than you may have previously thought and that you have fun styling your outerwear this season.

How She'd Wear It with Style and Cheek - Boho Cape Trend

1. McQ Alexander McQueen Gradient Sunglasses

2. J.Crew Metal Medallion Earrings

3. Sam & Lavi Mandy Dress

4. Louise Et Cie ‘Allemont’ Bootie

5. Zara Buttoned Cape Coat

6. Trasparenze Poland Grey Woven Tights

7. ASOS Turban Headband In Wool Mix Moss Stitch

8. Samantha Wills Enchanted Nights Necklace in Cream

9. MADEWELL Inkstone Cuff

10. Monserat De Lucca Serpiente Pouch

Turbans and capes are two fall trends I wouldn’t have thought to put together before this post but if you’re looking for a hair accessory to wear besides a floppy hat, try a turban. Turbans are great because your hair is still free to bounce around, which means if you can still have some fun styling your do; with this outfit I’d go with something kinda 60s since there already is some serious mod potential. The turban and cape, combined with a floral shift, textured tights, and sexy ankle boots, create a super cute boho vibe. Just add a bunch of vintagey gold jewelry, a standout clutch, and sunglasses in a classic but unusual shape and you’re good to go.

How She'd Wear It with Style and Cheek - Cape Trend Equestrian Style

1. Karen Walker Number One Mirrored Sunglasses

2. ELLSWORTH & IVEY Oxblood Marilyn Cape from Tuckernuck

3. Enzo Angiolini ‘Eero’ Leather Boot

4. Thomas Mason For J.Crew French-Cuff Shirt

5. J.Crew Pixie Pant

6. Mania Mania Potens Earrings in Smokey Quartz

7. J.Crew High-Low Crewneck Sweater

8. Tory Burch Cecily Charm Bracelet

9. Michael Kors Petite Darci Watch

10. Kate Spade Cedar Street Leopard Maise

Equestrian style is the way to go if you’re working with a utilitarian style cape like the oxblood Marilyn Cape above. This is a cape that looks great with jeans and sweaters but if you’re going for a more elevated look then a white button down and riding boots really take the outfit a step above casual. The Pixie pants are thicker than leggings and if you need an extra layer you can always wear a sweater over the button down. To make this outfit more exciting, add luxe accessories. Think leopard print, gold, uniquely shaped earrings, even statement sunglasses. You never know when you’ll need sunnies on a fall day, so keep them close.
