Doughnut Bun, Sock Bun, What Have You

I was inspired by this post from xojane.com to delve into the world of big buns. It’s the easiest tutorial I have found. Maybe I’m partial to these buns because I dreamed as a child of becoming a ballerina (didn’t last long) but I think this hairstyle is pretty, especially on Kate Beckinsale.

Start out by putting your hair into a fairly high ponytail. This is the hardest part, making sure your ponytail is tight enough and everything is smoothed down. I chose to do this with dirty hair (ew!) but I used dry shampoo to get some texture.

Here’s the doughnut. I bought the Conair Bun Maker at Ulta a few weeks ago. Inexpensive, easy, probably the only hair accessory I’m not too lazy to use right now. You can also use a rolled up sock that has the toe cut off.

My hair is ridiculously fine which I hate but what can you do? Fine hair doesn’t mean you have to wear little dinky buns. This creates a full bun that’s pretty and doesn’t look too over the top.

Waterfall your hair around the doughnut like the video says to do. Make sure the hair is evenly distributed around the doughnut so that the doughnut doesn’t show through the bun. Yes, you will look silly doing this so just embrace your inner Cousin It.

Wrap the hair around the bun, tucking the pieces under the doughnut and secure them with bobby pins. You don’t have to use pins if you can get your hair to stay tucked in, but I like knowing that it will stay put so I shove a lot of pins in there.

Personally, I think a smoothed down look is best. My hair, because it’s wavy, tends to be uncooperative and poof out. If this is something that bothers you just make a tighter ponytail when you start. As bonus it will feel like you’re giving yourself a mini face-lift.

The end result! I didn’t use hairspray here but I would recommend doing a once-over if you’re going to wear this for a long period of time. Especially if you are prone to flyaways like me.

P.S. this is what the bun looks like after a grueling workout. I thought we were going errand running but Dan was crazy hyper so he forced my lazy bum to move. First we did the Insanity fit test and then P90X cardioX. Look at that exhausted face. I ended up with a lot of flyaways but the bun was still intact!
