I was at Red Light in the University District last summer and I saw this amazing tangerine slip. It was crazy bright and all I could think of was pairing it with a light blue dress with the slip peeking out the bottom. Kind of like the ‘static cling’ scene in Because I Said So where Mandy Moore has a hard time keeping her dress down, so she keeps adjusting her slip until she finally takes it off and Gabriel Macht is there to see it. I’ve seen this movie a billion times, love the costumes and the set design.
Slips aren’t really worn much anymore but they’re underrated. Yes, we have our spanx and oh how we love them, but slips can be used in many ways. They can be sexy if you’re wearing it coquettishly around the house, they can be helpful with clingy dresses and smoothing lines or accenting a dress with colorful lace. Check out my Pinterest Lingerie Leanings board.
Wolford Opaque Natural Light Forming Dress: I dream about wearing sleek numbers like these. They remind me of Nicole Kidman in Batman Forever, which is probably one of the only good things about that movie, except for this song or this if you’re romantic. Anyway, this is a very sexy, figure flattering slip dress that could make you feel very seductive. A similar style is this Only Hearts Second Skins Slip which comes in black or nude.
Anthropologie Stand-In Slip in Navy: Here it’s seen in Navy but it also comes in Raspberry and Neutral and all of them they would make a great layering piece. Because it isn’t see-thru and skims the body it can be worn outside of the house with the right compliments, like an oversize sweater or sheer dress. The Organic John Patrick Bias Slip has a similar casual vibe – perfect for walking barefoot around the house with a coffee mug in hand.
Yummie Tummie Black Slip: Maybe I am just a fan of the v-neck with lace but this is just a step below the sexiness of the Wolford slip dress. Which means it would be a great slip for day or work, especially with structured dresses that could use a little smoothing. But then again maybe you don’t want to hide the lace at the bottom. This Calvin Klein Underwear Naked Glamour stretch-satin slip is not as form-fitting as the Yummie Tummie slip but it’s still great for smoothing.
Calvin Klein Underwear Biba Roses stretch satin-jersey chemise: The color and the lace are gorgeous. Calvin Klein does a great job of mixing sturdy fabric with delicate lace in a way that makes you feel comfortable and girly. Wear this lounging around the house with a little sweater or layer it to make a casual outfit. Another pretty colored slip is this Gold Hawk Lace Detailed Peach Slip which is more night-time but the color is still springy.
Jenny Packham Chantilly lace and silk-chiffon chemise: It’s so bright you have to let a little peek out of your dress! In a way I wish this dress wasn’t see-thru, I’ve always thought slip dresses as every day dresses were beautiful, but this shows a bit too much skin. If you love the yellow but feel modest, check out the matching robe. Another yellow slip is this Victoria’s Secret Lace-trim Satin Slip in lemonade/jade which would be pretty if just a little of the top showed.
Mimi Holliday by Damaris Frappe chiffon and lace chemise: Great bold color. I was hoping to find a lot of bright slips that would be ideal for layering but there were only a few. This piece is very flattering and sexy. It can be worn discreetly to show off the lace or you could hide it and be the only one who knows you’re a smoking hot lady. Another lacy number is this Carine Gilson Gabrielle silk-satin chemise in Amber which I chose for the rich amber color.
Rosamosario Roass Disera silk-chiffon slip: It’s a little bit Grecian with the chiffon layers. This is probably my favorite of the slips because it’s so feminine and ethereal. I want to lounge in this in a warm lush garden and where someone is serving me food and wine while I gaze out over a pond. How dreamy. A similar style is this Undrest Swiss dot cotton chemise which makes me think of Betty Draper drinking wine at 10am on a Monday while waiting for laundry to finish.
Stella McCartney Josephine Marrying silk-satin chemise: Dan doesn’t understand my obsession with lace. I love it. It’s not just romantic, it’s visually exciting. Here the mixture of silk and lace makes a perfect under-thing. Whether you’re wearing it alone or under something, it feels great. I prefer the V-neck but this Victoria’s Secret Lace Applique Satin Slip in Ivory is just as lovely with delicate straps and detailed lace.
3.1 Phillip Lim Point d’esprit stretch-silk slip: So cute! Lavender with polka dots is charming but the fact that this slip is see-thru makes it daring. You could show just a bit of the top under layers but this is a very comfortable looking slip in a great spring color. This Eberjay Butterfly Valley jersey chemise mimics the sweet details and I love the pistachio lace.
