I hope everyone had a nice Halloween. Last night, in search of the rest of my costume, Dan and I went to the mall not realizing it would be dominated by little trick-or-treaters and their parents. I’ve never seen the mall so busy. And yet, I had a woman say to me while shopping how nice it was that the stores themselves were so quiet. With all the families walking around the main area it’s true, it felt like we had the shops to ourselves. She even waved and said she enjoyed talking to me as she walked out. It was sweet. But what I noticed in the crowds of little monsters were the over the knee boots that women were wearing. Everyone seemed to have a pair. It’s an incredibly tricky trend. I haven’t found a pair that’s worked for me either due to my height or size, but I still adore them. I was on the hunt a few years ago and all the options were either too slouchy or made me feel like an elf, but the thing about this trend is that it comes back. This year the boots are sleeker, sexier, and all around winning in the chic category.
But how do you wear them? Well, the easiest combination is with mini skirts, especially the flowy or flared variety. You want to expose that little slice of skin between the top of the boot and your skirt to keep from looking weighed down by your outfit, but you also want to make sure your top half is fairly covered. Embrace layering with blouses, sweaters, blazers, coats. This trend looks good covered on top because it’s so sexy below the waist. You can’t hide from the sexy, you have to embrace the sexy. Other than skirts and dresses these boots look good with skinny jeans or leggings paired with big sweaters or long tunics. Think “casual equestrian” if your boots are flat.
