How She’d Wear It with Style and Cheek

HSWI November

In honor of the cobalt coat the lovely ice queen Betty Draper wears on Mad Men (she’s Nordic!), I felt compelled to write a post about other cobalt coats. Cobalt is an extremely versatile and beautiful color which can be worn year-round. And though the coats below are on the heavier side to keep you warm this fall and winter, that doesn’t mean they have to be put away come spring if there’s still a chill in the air—just wear fewer layers. Also, as Better Draper demonstrates, a heavier coat does not necessarily mean bulky or masculine – on her it’s authoritative, matriarchal, and beautiful. When you match those qualities with a powerful, bold, and bright color like cobalt? Near perfection.

1. J.Crew Stadium-cloth Boulevard Trench

2. Zara Leather Bag With Metal Tab

3. Topshop Textured High Neck Tunic

4. Tory Burch Carley Bootie

5. Anthropologie Floral Patchwork Scarf

6. Topshop Black Swallow Sheer Tights

This buttoned and collared coat is lady like as all hell and has the perfect shape and cut to wear over a sexy dress. It’s a confident and bold coat that’ll keep you warm without revealing too much of what’s underneath, which can be anything from a slinky slip dress to the structured little black dress seen above. I almost went full Mad Men with this coat, but couldn’t resist those beautiful velvet bordeaux boots and funky sparrow tights, because come on, they’re sexy and fun and unexpected, and who doesn’t like that?

How She'd Wear It with Style and Cheek - cobalt coat with printed pants

2. Dolce Vita Holland Booties

3. Plush Cat Texting Mittens

4. Zara Floral Print Trousers With Piping

5. Madewell Fringeflower Blouse

6. Kate Spade New York Sedgewick Place Phoebe

Combining cobalt with anything floral is super fun. It’d be easy for these pants to end up looking like you’re wearing bad 1960s wallpaper, but these pants and this outfit look like what an Upper East Sider might wear to watch a polo match on an autumn Saturday in Connecticut. High class with just a little sass. And the rest of this outfit is easy—just wear lots of black, because black won’t take attention away from the fun pants or coat. And check out those cat mittens—cute potential stocking stuffer!

Here’s what you wear when it’s time to go shopping but a snowstorm just blew through and left behind a foot of snow for you to tromp through. This coat will keep you warm enough you won’t even need to worry about layering the bottom—either wear a long tunic with a pair of cute patterned leggings or add a knit skirt to keep your bum nice and toasty. Now all that’s left to do is to grab a good pair of boots to keep your feet nice and dry and you’re good to go!
