How She’d Wear It with Style and Cheek

HSWI march 2014

For March we’re going to explore the world of tartans. With spring around the corner it seemed like the best choice was a trend that has one foot in winter and another in spring with a variety of dark and light patterns. This week I’m focusing on my personal favorite ‘Black Watch tartan’ which is a Scottish tartan of navy, green, and black. It seemed like the perfect choice for the beginning of March where people are still feeling the harshness of winter, we even saw a smidge of snow over the weekend, so take your darkest tartan pattern and wear it till the sun shines. And maybe even after if you’re feeling bold.

How She'd Wear It - Black Watch Tartan Blazer

1. J.Crew Gem Pearl Earrings

2. J.Crew Polka-Dot Popover

3. Kate Spade New York Mercer Isle Small Sloan

4. J.Crew Symmetrical Stone Statement Necklace

5. J Brand 901 Low-Rise Leggings-Style Jeans

6. J.Crew Schoolboy Blazer In Black Watch Plaid

7. J.Crew Classic Pavé Link Bracelet

8. Zara Fishnet Ballerina Flats

I normally don’t accessorize to this extent but felt this outfit needed it. Part of the fun with Black Watch is all the classy British imagery that comes to mind, and this outfit is a play on something you might see a Downton Abbey guy wear on a foxhunt. Gaudy jewelry and a feminine blouse and flats keep this outfit playful and girly.

How does one wear tartan leggings? With confidence and luxe but casual accessories. These leggings are going to attract a lot of attention, but really the same rules apply with this look as with our first; to keep things feminine contrast the Black Watch pattern with differing colors and styles. You don’t want to look like you’re wearing a school uniform, so don’t be afraid of mixing Black Watch with bright or badass leather pieces.
