As a child of the 90s who encountered many wonderful trends such as jelly shoes, puffy jackets, and bucket hats, it was overalls that I loved the most. In elementary school overalls were my thing. I thought I looked so badass when I’d wear one side unhooked. They were the shit. Eventually I traded my overalls for jeans but those years devoted to overalls live on in my memory.
Were you as hooked on overalls as I was? If you were, you’ll be happy to know that overalls are having a moment. Now is the time to wear them as much as you did as a youngin’. Ok maybe not quite that much but overalls really are back. But instead of a puffy jacket how about pairing overalls with a peasant blouse, a white tee, a scarf, flats, or motorcycle boots? There are many ways to style your overalls that will leave you feeling like a put together adult, instead of a cute kid who just traded their chocolate pudding for Gushers at recess. We’re talking laidback style, with a little charm and a little edge.
It’s now significantly easier to find overalls that have a flattering cut than it was in the 90s. These Paige denim overalls are the perfect example of overalls that would be perfect for a trip to the farmers’ market, because they are fitted in all the right places. A striped top and brown leather bucket bag are great staple items for this simple outfit. However, the pièce de résistance is a pair of Birkenstocks because these guys are also making a comeback and putting them together with overalls is like rediscovering peanut butter and jelly, ie DELICIOUSNESSS.
Maybe you’re less farm girl, more grab some dessert at midnight at one of your city’s local dessert joints. In that case, a pair of short black overalls and some motorcycle boots might be right up your alley. Day or night, this is just the right amount of edgy and feminine. The embellished top is a step up from a regular white tee and the colorful bag breaks up the black & white motif. The boots here really are the key. Wearing flats or some Chucks with this look would be the easy way out, but I say up the badassery and lengthen those legs a bit with a heel.
