Blanket capes or throws as I referred to them last week in my Capes, Ponchos, and Throws post are extremely popular this season. We can give thanks to Burberry for bringing back this trend by showcasing the coveted initial embroidered cape blanket in their Fall 2014 RTW collection which celebrities such as Olivia Palermo and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley made ever more popular. As you can see in the collage below I took some outfit inspiration from Olivia and Rosie but of course I left out the coveted Burberry monogrammed cape ($$$$). We do what we can with what we’ve got and thankfully ASOS has some seriously cute cape blankets right now. Unlike normal cape coats a cape blanket is closer to a shawl, and is lighter weight so if you live somewhere with warmer weather or are confronted with a surprisingly mild fall evening a cape blanket is a great outerwear choice.
Olivia Palermo is my celebrity style icon and I’d be silly to not recreate a look of hers that I love. While I had hoped to find a pair of thick cool weather shorts, I was drawn to the wine color of this skirt paired with the browns in the cape and greens in the plaid button down. The boots really make this outfit and thankfully there are quite a few affordable over the knee boot options out there. You can’t be shy about accessorizing a look like this, so I went with super cute floppy hat and an animal print purse for a playful sexy boho vibe.
If you’re not already aware, black and white is the beloved combination for fall 2014 (and spring 2015!) so this outfit is incredibly easy to recreate, even if you choose a pair of black jeans or trousers instead of sexy leather leggings. One of the sexiest things you can do this fall is show a little ankle so make sure those cropped jeans and flats are ready to go. Like the black pants, your white top choice can be as simple as a white tee or more intricate like this guipure lace shirt. Your jewelry is where you’ll add a bit of color and here I went with blue, knowing that lapis would add the right amount of drama to stand out among the black and white.
