What to Pack for a Desert Vacation

We’re off to Wenatchee, WA this weekend for a mini vacation with friends and I’m stoked. It’s an annual trip I’ve taken since high school but we haven’t been back since 2012. It feels like forever ago which is probably why I am so ready to get over there. We’re going to be on Lake Entiat doing some pseudo camping (there’s an air conditioned trailer but we sleep in tents) but the main thing I love about this trip is that it feels so different from home. Wenatchee has a semi-arid desert-like climate which is extremely different from our super green Seattle landscape. Once we cross the mountains we’re in for near 100 degree days and 60 degree nights. I’m all about it. A vacation to me is going somewhere outside your regular surroundings, plus friendship, plus alcohol.

The majority of the trip is spent chillin’ with hard cider (or beer), a bunch of fatty food, and much silliness. In the past we’ve gone jet skiing, boating, wine tasting, but usually we stick to the basics like swimming and playing board games in the shade. No matter what the day’s plan, you have to prepared with threads that are cool and comfortable but that you also don’t mind getting dirty.

It is hot as hell over there during the day, so I pick things that can double as a swimsuit cover-up as well as one or two loose sundresses. At night it gets super cold, so I pack some layers to bundle up. Bottom line, it’s a camping trip (sorta), so comfort is king! Below I’ve put together a collage of what I’d ideally pack for a trip to Wenatchee, but these picks would also work for any camping or lakeside or otherwise outdoorsy summer expedition.
