Ever since I watched Byrdie Beauty’s Cool Girl Side Flip tutorial, I’ve been dying to try it. It’s the hairstyle that all the It girls are wearing, it’s like the iconic ’90s hair flip that I remember being in awe of as a kid. You’ve seen it in movies and tv shows from that era, where the girl plays with her hair and flips it to one side in a nonchalant kind of way, where it stays, looking perfect and sexy. If any of us mere mortals tried to do this our hair would just respond to gravity and fall right back into place, ruining the look. But anyway, picture that hair but with a bit of undercut style mixed in so you look badass despite not having the gumption to actually take an electric razor to your head. It’s edgy, sexpot, bed head hair. And I want it.
Finally, this weekend I went for it. I was worried the result looked too ’80s party girl because I’m obviously used to flat hair and any bit of volume scares me. But it looked just as the name describes it – cool. I tried it again the next day, attempting to improve my skills and achieving more volume.
For someone that lacks hair skills, I was stoked that the tutorial was easy enough for me to replicate (keep this in mind fellow amateurs!) all you need is a comb for teasing and some finishing spray. I used Bumble and Bumble Dryspun Finish to get a bit more volume for my fine hair. Dan loved it. He said it gave me immediate attitude. While I won’t be rocking an undercut anytime soon, I think I’ll be styling my hair like this more often.
