Each December I end the year with a Holiday inspired beauty recreation. This year I’m bringing you the same but the only difference is all of the pieces used are affordable, drugstore versions of their department store counterparts. I received a handful of offline feedback regarding the Marchesa Fall 2015 look back in October because all of the pieces were affordable! Pieces you could pick up at Target and not feel guilty about spending money on cosmetics because you’re not breaking the bank. Trust. I feel you. I enjoy a little splurge on makeup here and there but sometimes I like to save money and get a bit thrifty. So let’s incorporate that same theme into a holiday look!
Last year I went for a softer look that was all about the winged eyeliner. This year I’m taking it back to the classic red lip. There are tons of red lip options out there and I think by now we are all used to a bit of boldness when it comes to our lip color. Let’s keep it classic but slightly neutral…if that’s even a thing.
Starting off with our face we want to keep things matte. Let’s leave the drama for the lips. I recently tried the NYX Invincible Full Coverage Matte Foundation and I’m really liking it. I tend to stay away from the matte foundations because my skin is über dry. But this product leaves my skin just matte enough without looking like the Sahara desert.
If you’re super oily apply a finishing powder to buff out your pores and keep the oil away. Plus a finishing powder is great for touch ups throughout the night. To keep from looking too bronzed, try the e.lf. Illuminating Face Palette. This has been my go-to palette for the past month. The darkest shade is dark enough to help contour and add a touch of color to my face without looking like an oompa loompa. The medium 2 shades are great for shadow bases, which we will use later on. Finish off with a touch of blush, nothing too strong, such as the Sonia Kashuk Beautifying Blush in Flushed.
On to the eyes, start with a base color all over. Since we already used the e.lf. Illuminating Face Palette let’s use it again. Use the second lightest shade all over the entire eye up to the brown bone. Next up is the NYX Roll On Shimmer. Roll onto the lids and blend out using your finger. If you want to amp up the drama, apply a bit into the inner corners of your eyes and down along the lower lashline. Go super dramatic with false lashes or finish off your eyes with some lash enhancing mascara. We all know I love Lancôme’s Hypnôse Drama Mascara. But…if I’m feeling thrifty I do always have the L’Oreal Voluminous Original Mascara in my makeup bag. It’s great for when I don’t want to spend the money but still want my lashes to be full and long.
The inspiration photo showcases a red lip that isn’t too shiny and is definitely not matte. It’s also a little imperfect, which I love. Skip the lip liner and go straight for a lip stain pencil or creme for this look. For starters, it will last longer and since we’re talking the Holiday’s you’re likely out at parties, kissing under the mistletoe, or eating delicious food. Keeping your lips in place is a definite must. Secondly, they will help to create a not so perfect lip look that a liner and lipstick combo seem to achieve. Try the Revlon Color Burst Lip Balm Stain in Smitten or Romantic.
