In preparation for our Austin trip, I need to get myself a pair of shorts. If that sentence gave you the “ugh, shorts” feeling then you probably understand how not excited I am. The only thing worse than shorts shopping is swimsuit shopping. Amiright? There’s just so much leg exposure! And for those of us with bigger or more muscular thighs, this can be a scary thing. Really scary.
Finding shorts that are the proper length that flatter your legs without making your thighs look sausagey is difficult, and then when you do find ones that treat your thighs nicely, you might get that weird crotch penis sticking up thingy. What IS that?! And then you have to make sure the shorts make your butt look good. How many times have you stood in the dressing room and thought, “why did they put the pockets there??” Pancake ass is not a good look.
But I am determined, as I have a bunch of suitable tops for warm weather and they could really use a casual bottom. So my weekend is going to be devoted to trying on a bunch of shorts and likely huffing and puffing my way through it. While my own search for shorts may be a long and cuss-filled road, that doesn’t mean yours has to be.
I put together a collection of some of the cutest short options available. There’s a variety of styles, colors, and lengths so if you’re in the market for some shorts, here’s a good cross-section of what you’ll find. Or if you’re really talented, find some cute Levis from a thrift store and make some cutoffs. I did this once, they went from dorky Bermuda shorts to x-rated booty shorts. Don’t give me scissors. What about you guys, where have you had luck finding shorts?
Madewell Denim Boyshorts in Thornecliff Wash – Madewell makes great jeans so I would hope their shorts are just as great. The length seems right! I love the casual, slouchy feel of these shorts and classic wash.
AEO Denim X Hi-Rise Shortie – Yes to all things burgundy! Even in summer! I tried these on recently and they were really cute and flattering but I felt a little self-conscious about the length. If I see them while shorts shopping this weekend I’m trying them again because I love the color.
Free People ‘Life’s Too Short’ Shorts – Love the embroidery and scalloped edges. So cute! While I’m on the search for some basic shorts, I don’t think anyone would pass up these retro inspired shorts.
AEO Sateen X Hi-Rise Shortie – I posted them in burgundy, I might as well post them in black because I can’t help but gravitate to all things black. And it’s understandable because these are just so dark and pretty.
Levi’s 501 Cutoffs – The classics. You know you can’t go wrong with Levi’s 501’s. Classic style, classic rinse, if I say classic anymore I might be banned from writing. You get my point, they’re your basic, cute, go-to jean shorts.
AEO Super Hi-Rise Shortie – The super high-rise style to make your retro dreams come true. These are kinda like modern, beachy, sailor shorts. Perfect beach shorts. But if you aren’t a fan of showing a little cheek, these probably aren’t for you.
Level 99 Chambray Drawstring Shorts – Is it vacation time yet? Forget trying to find fitted shorts, just go with a pretty pair of drawstring shorts. It’s like resort style up in here. When all else fails, drawstring fitness inspired shorts do the trick.
AEO Denim x4 Shortie – The teeniest of the teeny! If you can swing it, go for some low-rise short shorts. I think these are adorable and I love the rinse and rolled hem but be warned these are just as short as the burgundy and black pair without the higher rise.
Madewell High-Rise Denim Boyshorts in Bo Wash – These are a little shorter than the other pair from Madewell and a higher rise, so I’m guessing they’d be super flattering (wishful thinking). The other pair is more of a boyfriend jean short but these have a slight vintage feel.
Pilcro Hyphen Chino Shorts – I did burgundy, I did black, now I have to end with white. These shorts actually come in a ton of different colors but white have that going-on-a-boat-in-summer vibes, which is fun. They’re preppy but versatile.
