I’ve never really been a fan of turkey, but it’s not that I have strong opinions about turkey either, unlike Dan. The other day he went on at least a five minute rant saying things like, “The idea of roasting this huge bird that’s been pumped with hormones is ridiculous.” and “Monster roided out birds that are $3.99 a pound but still end up costing $50 because people feel the need to buy the biggest turkey they find.” I’d never thought about any of this before so I thought his turkey rant was pretty funny. Turkeys do get crazy big/expensive this time of year which IS insane. But really I don’t dislike turkey so much as I find it boring. Some people crave turkey – they get so excited about Thanksgiving dinner and I’m like eh just give me a roll, some cranberry sauce, gravy, a little bit of turkey and I got myself a nice sandwich. But it’s a tradition so I won’t rain on the parade of all the people who love the classic turkey feast. On the other hand I know I’m not the only one who could take it or leave it. So I put together some unique, mouth watering turkey recipes that are a little on the non-traditional side of Turkey day.
Smoked Turkey | Chow – I think smoked anything is delicious so why not the big bird? Yes, it definitely takes work and you need either a smoker or a grill to do it but the pay off would look, smell, and taste fantastic.
Mole-Roasted Turkey with Masa Stuffing and Chile Gravy | epicurious – Definitely what I call mouth-watering. This looks awesome and not at all traditional. Mole mole mole.
Thanksgiving Turkey: Roast/Braise Method | Michael Ruhlman – Roast your turkey like normal then braise for amazing looking gravy. Potentially this could be a super traditional turkey but it could also be crazy depending on your veggie choices.
Michael Symon’s Chorizo Stuffed Turkey | abc’s The Chew – When Dan sent me this recipes he said, “Chorizo corn bread stuffed turkey sounds nom,” so I thought cornbread was in the recipe. It’s not but now I can’t imagine this recipe without it. It does sound nom.
Massaman-Curry Turkey Osso Buco | Food & Wine – Definitely not what you’d expect but it’s turkey so it counts. Might as well just forget everything you know about turkey and try this.
Ancho-Scallion Roast Turkey Breast | Food & Wine – Ok, we like spicy things. Is that apparent yet? And also – look at the skin on that turkey! That is beautiful.
