The Makeup Lady

When it comes to choosing the best skin care treatments for your skin, you may find yourself lost and desperate. A late night run to Target for spot treatment products or concealer? I’ve been there, done that and still to this day do it. We all find moments of pure desperation with our skin when we’re not sure what to use or what will work. On The Makeup Lady we’ve discussed at home acne treatments and tackled anti aging, dry skin and countless other issues. But do you know which products in those tubes are actually working the best for you?

Acids seem scary and nothing you want to mess around with. The wrong use of a product or a bad product itself can leave you doing more damage to your skin then what you set out to do.

This week’s inspiration came from Refinery29 Beauty. They did a little post on Skin care Acids and I decided to put my own twist on the topic and offer up my own suggestions for the products I have seen work on myself and others. There are two main types of acids that I personally stick with and put into my routine – Salicylic and Alpha Hydroxy Acids.

It’s important to learn which acid is the best for your skin, your skin concern and when choosing your skin care treatments. Here are just two of the many acid treatments you can use for your skin.

Salicylic Acid

I could give you the Wikipedia definition or layman’s terms. Salicylic acid is a type of beta hydroxyl and phenolic acid. What’s this mean? It’s a topical acid that can be used to treat a variety of ailments. Warts, acne, thickened skin. This acid is derived from a willow tree and has natural exfoliating tendencies, hence the warts and dry skin treatment. Use this type of skin care treatment for unclogging pores and to help rid of dry, textured skin.

Alpha Hydroxy Acid

These were a big hit about a decade ago. Honestly, I’m not sure why there was such an increase in AHA products but they were everywhere. Mainly hitting the anti-aging market and gearing it to older women. It’s not such a bad thing because everyone needs skin care love. AHA’s are a group of different acids such as Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid and Citric Acid. These names probably seem more familiar than Alpha Hydroxy. This grouping is best to brighten, tighten and smooth your skin’s surface, hence the anti-aging category! Beware and use these in a low concentration doses. Too much of a good thing is not a good thing, especially for sensitive skin care ladies like myself.
