The Makeup Lady – Brows Part 1

The Makeup Lady

I have been contemplating doing a brow post for almost a year now. Every few months I email Julia with a list of monthly options and brows always make an appearance. But if I do a post on brows it has to be THE BEST and nothing short of perfect. I had these grand thoughts of different models and different brows, a how-to on shaping, filling, and perfecting your brow look. This was all just a dream as I work at least 40 hours a week at my real life job and making this all work out wasn’t exactly realistic. Finally I came to the conclusion that I had to make this post work and I was going to get it done. Since there is so much information on brows, I’m breaking it up into a 2 part series. First we will cover the basics of brow shapes and how to determine the shape based on your face shape. Then we will finish off with filling in and defining your brows.

Heart Shaped Face

If you have a heart shaped face, like Reese Witherspoon you’ll benefit from a round, low arch shaped brow. No pointy arches here. This brow shape helps to define and work with the natural shape of your face, keeping everything soft and natural.

Long Face Shape

I instantly think of Sarah Jessica Parker when it comes to a longer face shape. She balances out her brows with a straight look, with a minimal arch. As you can see the arch just slightly rounds out towards the end just to give the effect not being too straight or too bold.

Oval Face Shape

You’re in luck with this face shape because you basically pull off anything. Your jawline isn’t too strong, too long or too square. No need for a specific brow shape to balance out your face shape because anything will work. A good example of an oval face is Jessica Biel. She has a thicker brow, with a mid arch with just enough point to give some umph to her brows.

Round Face Shape

Kirsten Dunst is the epitome of the round cherub face. Round face beauties need some help elongating the jawline and an arched brow will do the trick. As you can see in the photo of Kirsten, the arch is high and doesn’t come back down. She doesn’t have a dramatic arch line but one that is more natural and well suited for her face shape.

Square Face Shape

So you’ve got a square face like Demi Moore? Go for a full brow and make sure the arch of the brow aligns with the angle of your jawline. This can help soften your strong features and plays up those thick brows. Make sure you create an arch or else you’re left with a straight across strong brow that borders on a furry caterpillar.

Now that we have determined the shape for you, it’s time to get tweezing, waxing or threading. Remember that tweezing helps to define small spaces, like arches, while threading and waxing which helps to achieve a more natural look, and removes strands of hair in a row.

Finally we need to determine where your brows should start, stop and each.

Take a pencil, makeup brush or anything with a long stem. I prefer a long stemmed eye shadow brush for this process.

A)  Align the end of the stick from the top of your brow to the bottom of your nose. This is where your brows should begin.

B)  Move the stick to align with the nose and the outside of the pupil. This is where your arch (if you need one) will begin.

C)  Now move your stick from your nose to the outside of your eye and that’s where your brows should end.

D)  Make sure everything is parallel and even. Your start and stop points should line up once all is said and done.

That’s all there is to it. If you feel apprehensive on the shape you should have or how to create that shape, don’t be afraid to consult with a professional. They are trained and certified to help in these cases and that’s what they are paid to do. And please remember to not over tweeze or wax! Pencil thin eyebrows are gone like the 90’s and we don’t want to bring those bad boys back.

Next week we will tackle all the different brow products on the market, what to use and how to use them to define these perfect new brows.
